Introducing TMMi 2.0
TMMi version 2.0 reflects the evolving software engineering landscape, with greater focus on Agile, DevOps, quality engineering, and AI
We are pleased to announce the release of TMMi version 2.0, a significant milestone in the evolution of the Test Maturity Model integration (TMMi) framework.
Developed to reflect the changing needs of the software industry, TMMi v2.0 introduces significant enhancements aimed at improving the clarity, usability and practical application of the framework.
The updated version incorporates feedback from practitioners and provides stronger alignment with modern software engineering practices, while continuing to support organizations on their journey towards improved test maturity.
What's new in TMMi version 2.0?
TMMi v2.0 introduces several important changes across the framework.
A stronger focus on business value
TMMi v2.0 places greater emphasis on understanding why test process improvement matters to the business.
A value statement has been added to each process area to help organizations communicate the benefits of improvement to stakeholders and better connect testing activities with business objectives.
Built for Agile and DevOps environments
As Agile and DevOps have become increasingly central to software development and delivery, TMMi v2.0 has been adapted to better support these ways of working.
New examples, work products, and sub-practices have been incorporated throughout the framework, while practices that are less relevant to Agile and DevOps environments have been reviewed, simplified, or removed.
A leaner and more practical framework
The TMMi model has been reviewed with the aim of making it more relevant to today’s ways of working, reducing unnecessary documentation and improving ease of use.
As a result, TMMi v2.0 is approximately 30% shorter than TMMi Release 1.3, while retaining the original intent of its goals and practices.
Greater consideration of AI and test automation
TMMi v2.0 recognises the growing role of Artificial Intelligence and test automation in modern testing.
The updated framework introduces a People, Process, and Technology perspective and provides expanded guidance on where and how AI can support different TMMi process areas.
The new version also includes an expanded discussion of AI and software testing, providing further context for organizations exploring the opportunities and challenges associated with AI.
A stronger connection with quality engineering
Quality engineering is increasingly influencing how organizations approach quality throughout the software development lifecycle.
TMMi v2.0 explores the applicability of TMMi within a quality engineering context, including practices such as shift-left, peer reviews, Behaviour Driven Development (BDD), service virtualization, and integrated development and test approaches.
Dedicated mapping shows how quality engineering topics relate to TMMi process areas and improvement goals.
A simplified model structure
One of the significant structural changes in TMMi v2.0 is the removal of Generic Goals and Generic Practices as separate components.
Their underlying intent has not been removed. Instead, institutionalization is now incorporated into the model through areas including the new Implementation and Habit process area and the revised Test Process and Integration process area.
This change is intended to make the framework easier to understand and use, while also simplifying the way assessments are approached.
TMMi is not a checklist
TMMi v2.0 also reinforces an important principle: TMMi is not intended to be used as a checklist.
The framework focuses on the meaningful interpretation and application of its goals and practices, rather than simply checking individual practices as completed.
This reinforces the purpose of TMMi as a framework for meaningful and sustainable test process improvement, rather than a set of activities to be completed for their own sake.
What does TMMi v2.0 mean for organizations?
The release of TMMi v2.0 provides organizations with an updated framework that is better aligned with the realities of modern software development.
Whether an organization is adopting Agile and DevOps, exploring AI-enabled testing, strengthening its quality engineering practices, or looking to demonstrate greater business value from testing, TMMi v2.0 provides a framework for supporting continued improvement.
